These courses cover a range of topics relevant to the current demands of the human services field and each one will help you find new, fulfilling ways to help others. Currently, Ashton College offers the following human services continuing education courses: Autism and ABA Therapy, Dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach, Gerontology, and Therapeutic Recreation. We will take a look at what each course provides and how that will help you build a rewarding career in human services.

Autism and ABA Therapy

By taking Ashton College’s autism course online, you will become familiar with the autism spectrum and the challenges faced by individuals living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). You will also learn the basic theory behind Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) Therapy and how it can help with ASD. Upon completion of the course, you will have a strong understanding of ASD and the range of challenges it presents.

Autism courses like the one offered at Ashton are useful in a variety of occupations. Education assistants and personal support workers often work directly with people on the Autism spectrum. Dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach

The Dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach course at Ashton College teaches you the facts, common perceptions, and myths surrounding dyslexia. You will learn how professionals with Orton-Gillingham training can help individuals with dyslexia. By learning how a dyslexia program can improve a student’s learning capabilities, you will be able to identify appropriate accommodations for individuals with dyslexia.

This course provides valuable skills that can be applied by professionals working in education, childcare, and therapy. The skills and knowledge are even applicable to daily life for parents and relatives of children with dyslexia.

Gerontology

A geriatric certificate program or gerontology course is an excellent way to expand you skill set as a care worker or therapist. Gerontology is the study of adult aging and how it affects us physically, psychologically, and socially. The gerontology course at Ashton College provides students with an understanding of the goals, issues, and research methods used in this area of study. Students will complete the gerontology course with an understanding of the causes and treatments of common psychological problems that affect older adults.

Therapeutic Recreation

A therapeutic recreation course will teach you about the field of therapeutic recreation (also known as recreational therapy) and what is expected of a professional recreational therapist. Therapeutic recreation improves the quality of life of an individual through carefully planned recreation and leisure activities and opportunities. Through Ashton College’s two therapeutic recreation courses (Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation and Advanced Therapeutic Recreation), students will learn the role and function of therapeutic recreation, how to identify disabilities and barriers for individuals, how therapeutic recreation can help these individuals, and much more. The therapeutic recreation course is perfect for aspiring recreational therapists, kinesiologists, care-aides, and foreign-trained health care professionals.
