Discover Your Passion with a Career in Human Services

Are you excited to get up in the morning and feel motivated to go to work? If not all the time, some of the time? According to a survey done by Survey Monkey in April 202150% of Americans are extremely satisfied with their jobs and 36% are somewhat satisfied. We want you to be part of that 50% of extremely satisfied people! While in Canada, the most recent survey is from 2018 done by the Gandalf Group and the Globe and Mail. They found that 67% of Canadians are satisfied and enjoy their career. While the majority are satisfied with their career choice, work hours, and company culture, less than half are satisfied with their salariesWhile income satisfaction is a big part of being satisfied with your career, for many a meaningful, fulfilling career they are passionate about outweighs most other factors. If you are looking for a career that will bring your fulfilment and passion, a career in human services may be for you!

What is Passion?

Passion for work is enthusiasm and excitement for what you do, being motivated and concentrated on your work and not clock watching. You may feel close to this or the complete opposite of this. If you have the resources to change it, whether that is changing your mindset, getting further training, or transitioning into a new career, I urge you to go for it! If you find passion in your work you will:

  • Set yourself apart and define your path
  • Strengthen your personal development
  • Feed your creativity and innovative spirit
  • Passion in your work will make the work you do better
  • You will cease to dislike Mondays
  • Overcome obstacles in the workplace easier
  • Your positive energy becomes infectious
  • Be less stressed, allowing you to thrive in your personal life

Finding passion in your work leads to a better overall life and purpose. Unsure how to bring that purpose and zest for life back into your life? Look into a recreational therapy program to reinforce your zest for life, help you find ways to feel ‘the good’ we are all chasing, and ways to express yourself. A course like this can help change your mindset, help you transition to a human services career, or be beneficial for those who have taken a gerontology course or are currently working in helping role.

What is Human Services?

I have mentioned how human services would be a beneficial career for someone looking for a meaningful and fulfilling career, but what is human services and what roles are in it? The National Organization for Human Services describes the field of human services as “meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations.” Career options in human services are quite broad and can range from a mental health support worker or a registered behavior technician to an education assistant or professional life coach. Another option could be supporting children and adults with developmental challenges through Orton Gillingham training, autism courses or RBT training.

So, are you ready to fulfill your passion? Apply to a career program or register for a continuing education course today!
